The Joy of Online Banking
May 21st, 2008I used to be someone who preferred conducting my banking in person. I simply felt more comfortable physically handing someone my deposits and withdrawals. But if I wanted to transfer money from one account to another, for example, I had to wait until the bank opened, or be sure I made it to the bank before it closed. Despite this inconvenience, I never even considered looking into other options, and the concept of online banking just didn’t appeal to me. However, after about a year of hearing people rave about how much they love being able to engage in online banking, I decided that perhaps it was time for me to join the club, and made an appointment to meet with a representative from my bank. He assured me that online banking is completely secure and so simple that anyone can figure it out. I wasn’t sure how to get started, but I left there confident that I could make it work.
That was almost three years ago. I’ve been safely and happily relying on online banking since then. I honestly can say that I can’t imagine not being able to check my account balances on the weekends or in the evenings. I can transfer money from my savings account to my checking account with a simple click of the mouse. Sure, I can’t withdraw money from my account and have it pop out of my computer, but that might be asking too much. I can’t remember the last time I sat down and balanced my checkbook. I don’t recommend this, mind you. But the point is, through my online banking setup, I can check my account daily and see what is coming and going. And if there’s something that doesn’t make sense to me, I can call my bank and have them check into it.
As online banking has grown in popularity, so has the growth of internet scams. Most recently, people have reported receiving emails from their banks asking them to log into their accounts. Problem is, the emails are really from scammers, and voila – just like that - they have access to your account once you log in. Most banks caution their members against this sort of scam and have taken extra precautions to help guard against it. Personally, I have never had any issues with my online banking or my accounts. Perhaps I’ve been lucky, but I’ve also been cautious, which really doesn’t take much more than some simple common sense. No matter how many scams pop up, nothing will convince me to drop my online banking. The truth is, I enjoy using it too much.
Almost all banks these days offer some form of online banking, and usually free of charge. If your bank doesn’t, I would strongly recommend you find a bank that offers this convenience. It may be a scary concept at first, but before too long, you’ll be loving your online banking experience.
