Financing of a South Dakota vacation guide
February 12th, 2008A group of people involved in the tourist industry wanted to increase business state wide so they decided to design a South Dakota vacation guide that would steer tourists towards their establishments. Within their ranks they had someone that had been involved in the publishing industry and another person who was a writer so they thought they had a good chance at pulling it off. Their one big problem was financing. This association had members all across the state with many of them having contacts with others in the industry in their area so they hatched a plan to place ads within the guide, using that revenue to get the publication made. Every member was to go to his or her contacts and sell them an ad. Their plan was for all the write ups to be about the association members attractions, with the ads of the competitors to be placed out of context. If the story was about an attraction in north west South Dakota, then the ads around the area would be for the south west part of the state. The plan succeeded in raising the money needed but backfired in what it wanted to accomplish. Readers of the publication tended to gravitate towards where the ads were rather than where the attractions were.
