Balanced score card

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

If you are a part of an accounting or auditing department of any major or even minor company, you would probably have heard of a balanced score card. What is a balanced score card you ask? Well, if you aren’t aware of the term itself, you would surely be aware of the principle behind it. Remember your SAT scores? Rather than being absolute values like say 95 out of a hundred, they were typically presented in percentiles. This is one instance of a balanced score card. Another instance could be the percentile rank of your status in a class as compared to a percentage rank.

Advertising billboards

Friday, March 30th, 2007

More and more, my colleagues in the field of marketing think of billboard advertising as a waste of money. After all, no one really pays attention to advertising billboards anymore, do they? The billboards can not dance around or make noise to attract you. Besides that, most of the time you have passed them by within a minute of first seeing them. Given this, many people argue, what is the point? When I hear these kinds of opinions, however, I am sure to point out the fact that they are misguided.

The importance of a savings account

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Many people in our society are struggling financially. The values I learned from my parents are considered old fashioned today. During our childhood our parents stressed that if you wanted something you needed to save for it and if you did not have the money you did not buy it. A portion of any money that we had as children was placed in a savings account. This type of philosophy is not popular today. When I was growing up there were many times that I complained about having the forced savings account.

How to deal with bounced check

Friday, March 30th, 2007

Though anyone in my circle is sick of me pointing out the inconsistencies of billing, banking, and the infamous bounced check, you haven’t heard me gripe about it yet…so I say this: isn’t it interesting that when we are charged a bill, it is due on a certain date, but then when we call to investigate why our account hasn’t cleared, the company or institution says that it takes seven to ten days for the “check” to clear. (To drive the point home, what if you send a money order? Why does it still take seven to ten days? ) When you make a deposit, it is not recorded for a couple of dys.

Find old stock certificates

Friday, March 30th, 2007

You are cleaning out an old closet and you come across a hidden treasure. Hopefully it’s something that is worth more than an old school yearbook. The types of treasure that most people would love to find are old stock certificates. Decades ago many people would purchase stock certificates and then hide them away as part of their nest egg. In some cases, the individual would pass without telling anyone of their existence. Without knowledge of the certificates, the heirs would be oblivious to the fact that they owned a piece of a company.
